I am becoming a HUGE fan of adapted books. As a special education teacher, I always am looking for a way to engage my students, access their reading comprehension, teach them new vocabulary, and develop their matching and higher level thinking abilities. Adapted books, depending on the focus and topic, can do all of that and more! I began creating adapted books in hopes of providing seasonal books for teachers, but my brainstorming and editing eventually led to a product series that includes an adapted book and correlating worksheets that can be used at any time of the year for a variety of different students. Each book addresses a social issue that students with disabilities might face (looking/feeling different, feeling inferior to others...) and a positive adjective to describe the main character (super, pretty, excellent...).
My newest adapted book product is "Peggy the Pretty Pig." Penny the pig is a great friend! One day she goes swimming in the mud. She gets mud all over her and feels ugly. Luckily, she is reminded by her friend that she is pretty on the inside and on the outside.
